Main Media believes that a large section of the Indian population which lives in semi-urban and rural areas have a lot of stories to tell, a lot of the issues which the government and the administration should be concerned about. But sadly, these issues are not highlighted, the people here are not given a platform to voice their issues, their opinions. We started a one-of-its-kind to project to bring these issues to light, by exposing the corruption the common man of faces almost every day, the basic facilities which they, like every other citizen deserve but are devoid of so far, the administration’s indifference which has done only harm to the region.

Only when you move out of the media glare and brightness, the mainstream ones have to offer, will you see those at the periphery – those still awaiting roads, ration, electricity, medical and health facilities, schools, jobs and whatnot.

We aim to bring a change in the media industry. We want to balance out the focus of the cameras, pens and keyboards & keep panning them even towards the less glamorous but equally important issues the common man in non-metropolitan cities face. Often media is also held responsible for bringing change in the society, make a difference in the lives of the people. But media is different from social service or activism.

In our opinion, the only way media can make a difference is through responsible journalism, highlighting the burning issues as well as bringing out the problems of the people in villages, small towns and cities. If the local and hyper-local media highlights such issues, it slowly makes round, comes to the notice of the local administration and eventually reaches the higher level of authority. The process may take time but eventually, the aim of highlighting local issues and thus getting it resolved is met.

At a time when mainstream media focuses exclusively on the national capital, metropolitan cities and the big cities, initiatives like ours will bring in the idea that there is whole population out of these pockets which also face a lot of issues, as much as if not more, than their counterparts. If their issues are not resolved because they were never highlighted in the media before, then initiatives like Main Media will provide them the platform and give them a voice with the aim of helping their voices reach the administration and government.

Main Media has brought forth one such initiative, and we are confident that such projects might have started in other parts of India too but it is important to encourage and sustain such them. It is only through our work, can initiatives like us sustain in this industry, and it is only through funding can our work go on. They say work speaks for itself, it is true.

Main Media believes that projects like this will help promote the idea of establishing a personal communication with the common man, which we think is significant as we can’t have our bureaus or reporters everywhere. Communication at a personal level will encourage people to speak out their heart’s content without any barrier as it will give them the sense that someone amongst them is taking it upon themselves to make their voices heard.

Main Media is run by the TANZIL UTKARSH RURAL NEWSLINE LLP (TURN), a company incorporated on July 28, 2020 under section 12(1) of the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008. The TURN’s LLP Identification Number is AAT-1061. Its board of directors comprises Tanzil Asif and Umesh Kumar Ray.

Who Funds Main Media

Independent and Public-Spirited Media Foundation (IPSMF) is providing financial support to Main Media since 01 June, 2022 for hyper-local reporting on systemic issues in Seemanchal.

Main Media is one of the 10 news startups selected from India in Google News Initiative Startups Lab program. Created in collaboration between the Google News Initiative (GNI), global innovation lab Echos, and DIGIPUB News India Foundation, the GNI Startups Lab India supports high-quality reporting for local and previously undeserved communities.

Main Media’s founder Tanzil Asif is one of the 49 partners selected from around the world in YouTube’s Creator Program for Independent Journalists.

Main Media received Google News Initiative’s ‘News Equity Fund’ in 2022. It is a global commitment by Google to provide financial support and opportunities to news organizations that primarily serve underrepresented communities.

हम ये मानते हैं कि भारत की आबादी का एक बड़ा हिस्सा गांवों-कस्बों में रहता है। इनके पास कहने के लिए अच्छी-बुरी अथाह कहानियां हैं। इनके पास अपनी तमाम समस्याएं भी हैं, जो तत्काल हस्तक्षेप की मांग करती हैं। लेकिन, ये समस्याएं मुख्यधारा की मीडिया की पहुंच से या तो दूर है या फिर मुख्यधारा की मीडिया उन्हें खबर ही नहीं मानती है। बिजली, पानी, सड़क, रोजगार, अस्पताल, इलाज, राशन, स्कूल की मांग मुख्यधारा की मीडिया के लिए नाॅन-इश्यू हैं।

लेकिन, हमने इन उपेक्षित खबरों को दर्ज करने का फैसला लिया। इसी फैसले का परिणाम 2018 में ‘मैं मीडिया’ के रूप में (वीडियो और टेक्स्ट फाॅर्मेट में) सामने आया। ‘मैं मीडिया’ नेशनल प्लेटफाॅर्म नहीं, हाइपर लोकल प्लेटफॉर्म है। हाइपर लोकल मीडिया यानी लोगों का अपना मीडिया। आज के दौर में जब मुख्यधारा की मीडिया शहरों और राजधानियों के राजपथ तक महदूद है, तो हाइपर लोकल मीडिया प्लेटफॉर्म वक्त की जरूरत भी बन गई है, जो गांव-कस्बों, खेत-खलिहानों की बात करे। ‘मैं मीडिया’ भी यही कर रहा है।हमने अपने कैमरे, कलम और की-बोर्ड का रुख चकाचौंध से हटाकर गांव-कस्बों की धूल-मिट्टी की तरफ किया है। हम जिम्मेदार पत्रकारिता के जरिए आमलोगों की छोटी से छोटी समस्याओं को उजागर कर स्थानीय प्रशासन तक पहुंचा कर छोटे-छोटे बदलाव लाना चाहते हैं।

‘मैं मीडिया’ का कार्यक्षेत्र देश की राजधानी और बिहार की राजधानी से सैकड़ों किलोमीटर दूर सीमांचल क्षेत्र है, जो ऐतिहासिक रूप से उपेक्षाओं का शिकार रहा है। यहां के लोगों के लिए स्कूल-काॅलेज, अस्पताल, सड़क, रोजगार, बाढ़, नदियों का कटाव अब भी बड़ा मुद्दा है। ‘मैं मीडिया’ इन्हीं मुद्दों को उजागर करता है। हमारी कहानियों में सितारा परवीन है, जो सीमांचल के एक कस्बे से निकल कर इंडियन आइडियल शो तक पहुंची। हमारी कहानियों में मीर साजिद हैं, जो दर्जनों गांवों को कटाव से बचाने के लिए कुदाल लेकर नदी का रास्ता मोड़ने निकल पड़े थे। हमारी कहानियों में सद्दाम हैं, जिन्हें नदी के कटाव से ईंटों को बचाने के लिए छह कमरों का मकान तोड़ देना पड़ा। हमारी कहानियों में वे बच्चे हैं, जो गांव में स्कूल नहीं होने के कारण नेपाल के स्कूल में पढ़ने जाते हैं। हमारी कहानियां में सुशीला देवी हैं जो गंगा के कटाव से विस्थापित होकर तीन दशक से रेलवे पटरी के किनारे झुग्गी में रह रही हैं।

लेकिन, हाइपर लोकल मीडिया की अपनी तमाम दिक्कतें हैं और इन सब में सबसे बड़ी दिक्कत है, हाइपर लोकल मीडिया को चालने के लिए फंड की कमी। हमने ये तय किया है कि हम पाॅलिटिकल और काॅरपोरेट फंडिंग नहीं लेंगे। हम चाहते हैं कि हमारा आम पाठक वर्ग ‘मैं मीडिया’ को चलाने में आर्थिक मदद करे। ‘मैं मीडिया’ बिना किसी रुकावट के सुचारू रूप से चल चलता रहे, आपकी समस्याएं उठाता रहे, इसके लिए जरूरी है कि आप हमारी मदद करें।

कौन चलाता है मैं मीडिया
